How Big Xenoblade Chronicles 3's Story DLC Will Actually Be

Monolith Soft's JRPG Xenoblade Chronicles 3, which released July 29, includes Expansion Pass DLC waves that will become available over the next year and a half, most notable of which is a fourth wave that includes a new story and is officially set to release by December 31, 2023. Considering the length of time between now and the release date of the fourth DLC, fans can expect not to receive details about the content anytime soon, but given tidbits of information from a recent interview, players can speculate on the size of its content.

It has been stated by developer Genki Yokota about this third, but not final, Xenoblade Chronicles game, that there would be a new story included at the end of the Expansion Pass, which they are considering making as large in volume of content as the Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Torna - The Golden Country DLC. The Torna DLC featured a new XBC 2 story that dove into the lives of that game's main characters some 490 years prior and had a 3.2 GB file size, leading to approximately a 20-hour play through time.

According to the Nintendo interview, Monolith Soft strove for a minimum acceptable volume of content (content added by necessity for the sake of the story world), which includes Xenoblade Chronicles 3's hellish character design. The volume of content also surpasses that of XBC 1 and XBC 2. Yokota also mentioned that they unintentionally made the base game of XC3 larger because they included everything that they wanted, but as with what happened with XBC 2's Torna story (which was initially conceptualized as part of the base game), some content had to be shelved to keep the budget and timeline manageable. So, it is not unreasonable that the story DLC of Xenoblade Chronicles 3 winds up being even larger than Torna's 3.2 GB, given the difference in proportions between both games and their file sizes, if some content didn't make it into the base XC3 game.

As for what would contribute to the volume of the Xenoblade Chronicles 3 Expansion Pass story DLC, Senior Director Tetsuya Takahashi said, "We always ask ourselves if there are any other ways to achieve greater satisfaction for players, and upon exploring and devising many ideas we ultimately decide the appropriate volume of content." So, the story DLC may have more story and gameplay content than a variety of maps or animations, which Takahashi believes would cease to impress players after the initial enjoyment.

Based on the volume of XBC 2's Torna - The Golden Country DLC, and the Monolith Soft developers' ideas on content, the XBC 3 story DLC may be, at a minimum, 3.2 GB. Based on the game studio's track record with XBC 2 and Torna, it could conceivably be larger. Fans will have to wait for perhaps an entire year before any details are forthcoming prior to the December 31, 2023 deadline, but they can likely rest assured that the Xenoblade Chronicles 3 story DLC will not be meager.
