Dragon Ball: Even Master Roshi Could Beat The Saiyan Saga’s Vegeta Now

At this point in the Dragon Ball timeline, even Master Roshi would have what it takes to beat the Saiyan Saga’s Vegeta. When that storyline played out in Dragon Ball Z, Master Roshi was so weak in comparison to everyone else that he stayed at home during all the fighting. The Saiyan Prince was such a powerful villain that no one character was able to beat him without help.

Many of the Z-Warriors have improved a great deal since Dragon Ball Z’s first saga. Back then, Goku was considered to be the Earth’s only hope against the two villains. Four of the heroes died before they could get past Nappa. And while Goku did overpower Vegeta in a one-on-one fight, he couldn’t handle his opponent’s Great Ape transformation. In the end, it took Krillin, Gohan, and some last-minute heroics from Yajirobe for them to survive the battle with Vegeta. Now, of course, nearly every character present that day is levels above their Saiyan Saga power level. The challenges and training they’ve endured have made characters like Goku, Vegeta, and Gohan so strong that they could beat any Dragon Ball villain.

It's not just the top Z-Warriors who have reached new heights in the Dragon Ball franchise. The fights that took place in Dragon Ball Super’s Tournament of Power revealed that Master Roshi himself has become a force to be reckoned with, even by the current standards of the anime. He’ll never be in the same league as the show’s Saiyan heroes, but his ability to challenge Goku in his base form and defeat Universe 4’s Ganos is indicative of just how far he’s come. Goku realized firsthand that Roshi has been training in secret. If he had that power in Dragon Ball Z’s Saiyan Saga, the Turtle Hermit could have singled-handedly trounced both Vegeta and Nappa.

The idea that a character who wasn’t strong enough to even bother challenging Nappa is now above the Saiyan Saga’s Vegeta speaks volumes about the progression of power levels in the Dragon Ball anime. After all, these changes aren’t exclusive to Roshi, as Yamcha, Krillin, and Tien are all more powerful than him, and in turn are easily capable of beating not only Saiyan Saga’s Vegeta, but also Dragon Ball Z’s Frieza and presumably Perfect Cell as well. It seems that the passing of time and intense training has done wonders for these characters. As for the Z-Warriors above them, their respective power levels are off-the-charts. Based on what’s been shown, Piccolo could most likely defeat Majin Buu now.

The insane adjustments that have been made to Dragon Ball’s power structure have benefited some more than others while a few haven’t been affected at all. While Chiaotzu continues to linger at the bottom with little to no improvements, Yamcha, Krillin, Tien, and Master Roshi have gotten considerably stronger, though not enough to make a difference in high-stakes battles. Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, and Piccolo, on the other hand, keep climbing higher and higher with no signs of stopping.
