Aliens: Dark Descent Announced With Terrifying Trailer

A terrifying announcement trailer for Aliens: Dark Descent was revealed during Summer Game Fest 2022. The upcoming title looks to adapt the beloved sci-fi horror franchise into an intense isometric strategy game. While games like Aliens: Fireteam Elite have brought the franchise into the gaming world in the past, Aliens: Dark Descent looks like a wholly original horror experience.

Since the release of Alien in 1979, sci-fi fans have been captivated by the terrifying Xenomorph and the grounded futuristic world it stalks through. Over the last 40 years the franchise has expanded to include multiple sequels, novels, comic books and more. Video game adaptations of the Alien franchise tend to lean into the film's action-packed sequel, Aliens, which pits a squad of space marines against hordes of the insect-like extraterrestrials. Games like Aliens versus Predator and Aliens: Fireteam Elite cast the Xenomorphs as weak animals rather than cunning predators, and the low player count of Aliens: Fireteam Elite suggests that players have grown wary of this interpretation.

Revealed during Summer Game Fest 2022 and posted to YouTube by Gamespot, an announcement trailer for Aliens: Dark Descent looks to put a more tactical spin on the space marines vs Xenomorph conflict. Coming in 2023, the game's cinematic reveal trailer sees a squad of marines using tactics and teamwork to survive against a large group of bloodthirsty aliens. While no actual gameplay has been revealed, the final shot in the trailer suggests that Aliens: Dark Descent will be a tactical isometric strategy game. The title is set to release on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC.

While Aliens: Dark Descent looks to transform the franchise into a squad-based strategy game, the sci-fi horror game Alien: Isolation returned to the series' roots back in 2014. Most Alien games see squads of colonial marines mow down Xenomorphs with their plasma rifles, but Alien: Isolation instead stuck a lone woman in a claustrophobic space station with an invincible alien hunter. The game was highly praised for its tense gameplay and authenticity to the 1979 horror film that kicked off the entire franchise. Now Aliens: Dark Descent looks to be a love letter to the more action-oriented sequel.

There have been plenty of Aliens video games over the years, but Aliens: Dark Descent looks to put a fresh spin on the concept. First-person shooters and horror titles dominate the Alien game lineup, so a an isometric strategy game could be a breath of fresh air. While details are scarce, Aliens: Dark Descent looks like an intriguing new spin on a beloved old franchise.
