Umbrella Academy's Sparrows Reveal Supports Dark Cube Fan Theory

The Umbrella Academy is preparing for the release of its third season, and it has been sharing some teases about the new team, the Sparrow Academy, and one of these supports a dark fan theory about Christopher, the cube-shaped member of the team. The rise of the superhero genre has made way for darker, lesser-known stories to be adapted to other media, and among those is The Umbrella Academy. Created by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá, The Umbrella Academy made the transition to the world of streaming in February 2019 thanks to Netflix and became an instant success, with its second season arriving in July 2020.

The Umbrella Academy introduced viewers to the Hargreeves, seven adopted kids with superpowers who were born on the same day, at the same time, and under the same mysterious circumstances as 36 other kids around the world. This curious event caught the attention of scientist and billionaire Sir Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore), who could only adopt seven of those kids and trained them to form the Umbrella Academy. However, Reginald wasn’t a good father, so the Hargreeves ended up parting ways and didn’t talk to each other for years. The Hargreeves reunited years later for Reginald’s funeral and to stop the fast-approaching apocalypse, but they failed at it and their solution was to jump to a safer place and point in time (Dallas, Texas, in the 1960s). By the end of The Umbrella Academy season 2, the Hargreeves finally returned to their present (2019), but they found major changes.

When the Hargreeves arrived at their home, they were surprised to see that Reginald is still alive, the apocalypse never happened, and Reginald didn’t create the Umbrella Academy, and instead adopted other children (and Ben) from the 43 babies and formed the Sparrow Academy. This new team appeared in the shadows at the end of The Umbrella Academy season 2, and the character who immediately caught the attention of viewers was a floating cube, later revealed to be named Christopher. This telekinetic green cube (played by “Existential Dread Inducing Psykronium Cube”) is the biggest mystery of the Sparrow Academy as he’s an actual member of the team and thus is understood to be one of the adopted children, but it’s unknown why he’s a cube – but a close-up look at Christopher might support a very dark theory about him.

The official Sparrow Academy Twitter account shared posters of each of its members, and Christopher’s poster shows the cube is made of pieces of skin. Christopher’s shape has made way for a variety of theories on why he’s a floating cube with green light, and one of those suggests he was a regular human, but a mission gone wrong could have left Christopher on the edge of death. Mirroring what happened to Ben in the Umbrella Academy and Luther, Christopher might have been severely injured during a mission (some suggest it was the same one that gave Sparrow Ben that scar on his face) and the only way Reginald could save him was by “keeping” him in a cube. This would show that the adopted children of Reginald Hargreeves are doomed to be marked by tragedy, just like the Umbrella Academy with Ben’s death and Luther’s transformation.

The Umbrella Academy still has many mysteries to solve, most importantly that of Ben’s death, so if Christopher really was a normal human who is now contained in a cube, viewers might not get the full story of how that happened in season 3. Of course, The Umbrella Academy could have a trick up its sleeve when it comes to Christopher and his story could be completely different, but what’s for sure is that he’s one of the most intriguing new characters.
