James Bond Producers Have Discussed Idris Elba As The Next 007

The producers behind the James Bond franchise confirm Idris Elba's name has come up, but one element makes it tricky. Last year, the long-running spy franchise reached a major milestone with the release of No Time to Die. Directed by Cary Fukunaga, the much-delayed No Time to Die was both the 25th film in the franchise and the swan song for Daniel Craig. The online conversation surrounding the next James Bond was already heating up well before Craig said his goodbyes, but producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson stated they were waiting for the dust to settle on No Time to Die before kicking off their search.

Now that viewers have had a few months to digest all of No Time to Die's twists, interest in who will be the next to don the 007 codename is rising once more. Very early discussions began in November, and while no names have emerged just yet, the internet certainly has its favorites. Tom Hardy, Henry Cavill, and RegĂ©-Jean Page have all become prominent contenders for James Bond. Elba, meanwhile, has been in the mix for years now. His star has only grown in the time it's taken to get No Time to Die to the big screen, meaning more fans are interested in seeing him take on the part of James Bond.

In a recent interview with Deadline's Crew Call podcast, the Bond producers were faced with the question of whether Elba's name has come up at all in regards to the franchise. Broccoli admitted that he has been a part of the discussion, but that it's still difficult to move forward in the wake of Craig's departure. She said:

Well, we know Idris, we're friends with him, and he's a magnificent actor. And, you know, it's been part of the conversation, but it's always difficult to have the conversation when you have someone in the seat. So, you know, I think we have decided that until No Time to Die has had its run and Daniel has been able to - well, we've all been able to savor, reap the benefits of Daniel's wonderful tenure, we're not gonna think about, or talk about anybody else.

For his part, Elba said in October 2021 that he wouldn't be the next Bond, though he indicated he did have some interest in it. It's worth mentioning that, at the time of his comments, Broccoli and Wilson likely hadn't begun their search. Should Elba be the right choice to play Bond, they could seek him out and change his tune. However, they might choose to go in a different direction for the part. Right now, it is still far too early to tell.

Nevertheless, those who have been championing Elba as the next James Bond will likely be thrilled to hear the producers are aware of their interest. Between his roles in Luther, The Wire, and, most recently, The Suicide Squad, Elba has proven himself to be a versatile actor who can handle the cool demeanor and action prowess expected of a 007. He'll have some major competition though, both from the internet's various picks and those the producers put forward themselves. Only time will tell if Elba becomes a true James Bond contender.
