Why A Stormtrooper Is In The Sarlacc | Screen Rant

Warning! Spoilers ahead for The Book of Boba Fett episode 1.

The premiere episode of The Book of Boba Fett finally reveals how the titular bounty hunter survived his encounter with the sarlacc pit, though the reveal of an Imperial stormtrooper within the beast's digestive tract alongside Fett is quite the surprise. Featured in a flashback taking place after Boba was knocked into the sarlacc's maw in Return of the Jedi, the remains of this lone trooper proved to be critical to the bounty hunter's survival. However, the reason why a stormtrooper was in the pit in the first place is certainly a question.

In The Book of Boba Fett episode 1, Fett has taken control of Jabba's palace following the Hutt's death and after Fett helped Din Djarin save Grogu in The Mandalorian season 2. However, Boba dreams of the past while suspended in a bacta healing pod, recovering from injuries presumedly sustained from the sarlacc's digestive juices. Boba Fett then dreams of his escape from the sarlacc, finding himself next to the remains of a stormtrooper who was likewise consumed by the Great Pit of Carkoon.

While the stormtrooper's helmet respirator proves to be invaluable to Boba as he claws his way to freedom using his flamethrower, the presence of a stormtrooper in the sarlacc at all is a bit of a mystery. During Return of the Jedi, the Empire wasn't involved during the Rebels' rescue mission where they liberated Han Solo from his carbonite prison and his captor Jabba the Hutt. As such, the stormtrooper was most likely consumed before Return of the Jedi, perhaps when the Empire was looking for the missing Rebel droids during A New Hope.

It's possible that the Imperial presence on Tatooine ran afoul of Jabba himself during the first Star Wars film, motivating him to take stormtroopers captive before feeding them to the sarlacc. Additionally, Jabba the Hutt being responsible for this particular trooper's fate makes the most sense if it's before or during the events of A New Hope, seeing as how Darth Vader himself was sent to negotiate a partnership with Jabba after the Death Star's destruction in Marvel Comics' canonical Darth Vader series. However, a more humorous possibility is that this unfortunate stormtrooper may have accidentally fallen in while looking for C-3PO and R2-D2.

Whatever the reason for this stormtrooper becoming sarlacc food as Boba was meant to be, it seems unlikely that the exact reason will ever be revealed. He may just be one of Star Wars' great perpetual mysteries (beyond the solution of him being simple plot convenience). That being said, the stormtrooper didn't die in vain seeing as how his helmet allowed Fett to live on to have further appearances in The Mandalorian and now in The Book of Boba Fett.
