The Matrix Awakens Trailer Teases Big TGA 2021 Reveal

A cryptic teaser hints at a big Matrix-related reveal at this week’s Game Awards 2021 livestream event. Recent rumors have suggested that an Unreal Engine 5-developed “playable experience” based on the blockbuster Matrix franchise is in the works for release sometime later this month, just in time for Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss to return to the silver screen in The Matrix Resurrections on December 22.

Given the franchise’s stylish, fast-paced action and primary setting of a virtual world where roughly anything is possible, The Matrix has lent itself rather well to video games over the past few decades. The first of these was 2003’s Enter The Matrix, which ran parallel to the first three Matrix films and is remembered for its strange assortment of cheat codes that allowed players to replace their character models with in-game vehicles. Other Matrix-tie in games included 2005’s The Matrix: Path of Neo, a retelling of the movies that put players in the role of Neo, and the short-lived The Matrix Online MMO. More recently, rumors suggest that Neo and Trinity will be coming to Fortnite as playable character skins during the ongoing Chapter 3.

Earlier today, Unreal Engine’s official YouTube channel posted a brief trailer for The Matrix Awakens: An Unreal Engine 5 Experience, a “playable experience” helmed by Epic Games and alongside many of the people behind the original Matrix films - including franchise co-creator and The Matrix Resurrections director Lana Wachowski. Very little is shown in the teaser itself save for an impressive rendering of Neo asking the viewer “how do we know what is real,” but the description notes that The Matrix Awakens: An Unreal Engine 5 Experience will feature voice acting from Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss and that more information will be shown at The Game Awards 2021 on December 9. In the meantime, interested fans can pre-download The Matrix Awakens: An Unreal Engine 5 Experience on Unreal Engine’s website.

This year’s Game Awards livestream is already set to be a blockbuster event, with a special guest appearance by Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings star Simu Liu and host Geoff Keighley teasing a major game reveal that many believe is a closer look at the previously untitled Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild sequel. The event is returning to an in-person format after the COVID-19 pandemic forced The Game Awards 2020 to be virtual-only, and roughly 40 to 50 games will be showcased.

Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss have been confirmed as presenters at The Game Awards 2021, making the upcoming reveal of The Matrix Awakens: An Unreal Engine 5 Experience at the event all the more fitting. It still isn’t clear what exactly The Matrix Awakens is, but it has been confirmed for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. More information will surely be revealed at Thursday’s The Game Awards 2021 livestream, so it won't be long before fans get to step into The Matrix in a whole new way.
