Señorita 89 Trailer Teases Deadly Beauty Competition From Spencer Director

The trailer for Señorita 89 reveals a deadly beauty competition. Hailing from writer and director Lucía Puenzo, and produced by Pablo Larraín, who directed Spencer and Jackie, the dramatic thriller unfolds amidst the glamour of 1980s Mexico. It focuses on Concepción (Ilse Salas), the matriarch of the most important beauty pageant in the country. Together with a team of expert makeup artists, in addition to trainers and even surgeons, Concepción welcomes the 32 finalists to her estate – La Encantada. While there, the contestants will experience 3-month hard training until they reach the Miss Mexico pageant.

But, of course, as a new teaser trailer makes clear, the initial rush and excitement give way to tears and potentially much worse. The streaming service Pantaya — the first premium platform dedicated to streaming Spanish-language films and television — will premiere the first two episodes of Señorita 89 on February 27 in the U.S. and Puerto Rico. From there, new episodes will be available every Sunday until the show concludes on April 10. In Spain and Latin America, the thriller will be available on Starzplay. With a cast that includes Juan Manuel Bernal, Ximena Romo, Natasha Dupeyron, Bárbara López, Luis Ernesto Franco, Edwarda Gurrola, and Ianis Guerrero, Señorita 89 is also produced by Juan de Dios, Angela Poblete, Mariane Hartard, and Christian Vesper. Although the ensemble may be unfamiliar to a worldwide audience, the actors are a combination of young standouts and esteemed award winners. Considering the acclaim of Spencer and the alluring premise, the thriller could be a big hit when it debuts in the new year.
