Spider-Man Is Finally About To Confront His Worst Storyline

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Amazing Spider-Man #74

In a new preview for Marvel's upcoming and final issue of Amazing Spider-Man from Nick Spencer, it looks as though Peter Parker will finally face his past with One More Day, as has been teased for several issues. Featuring a flashback involving Harry Osborn and the demon lord Mephisto, it looks as though a reckoning is coming for the Webslinger, and Spider-Man will likely be forced to remember the dark deal he made that corrupted his soul, resulting in one of the most controversial moments of his entire superhero career.

In the aftermath of Marvel's Civil War event, Spider-Man's secret identity as Peter Parker was public knowledge and resulted in Aunt May being shot by Spider-Man's enemies. However, Peter and his wife Mary Jane were approached by Mephisto, who offered to save May provided they give up their marriage. Agreeing to his terms, Aunt May was saved with Peter and Mary Jane's marriage and relationship being erased, seeing vast chunks of Spider-Man's history being retconned away as a massive reset for the character. This included the resurrection of Harry Osborn, who had died years ago as the Green Goblin. However, Harry being brought back had dark consequences, as he's been revealed as Spider-Man's newest foe Kindred who's been attempting to get Peter to remember his past sins and his dark deal that Mephisto made him forget.

Now, the preview for Amazing Spider-Man #74 from Nick Spencer and Patrick Gleason reveals a flashback, reminding readers of Harry's death prior to the One More Day deal. However, the flashback then shows Harry waking up after the deal was struck, seeing him conversing and getting answers from Mephisto, who confirms Harry's role is as a simple pawn in the greater game he's been playing with Spider-Man's soul for years. Here are the preview pages and synopsis for Nick Spencer's final issue:

  • It's AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #875, and the whole ASM team is coming together to bring you a massive issue that is the culmination of three years of AMAZING SPIDER-MAN!
  • It's all lead to this... "Hunted," "Sins Rising," "Last Remains," "King's Ransom," "Chameleon Conspiracy," "Sinister War"...and so much more all led to this climax and conclusion to Nick Spencer's landmark run on the best comic book in the world.
  • What will happen with Peter and MJ, Mysterio, J. Jonah Jameson, Norman Osborn, Aunt May and Kindred?! FIND OUT HERE!

Mephisto confirms that Harry's efforts to right his wrongs before his death weren't enough. Secondly, he also affirms that Harry's soul was sold by Norman to Mephisto years prior, granting Harry's father wealth, power, and his destiny as the Green Goblin. As such, it seems as though Harry's purpose has only ever been to be Mephisto's pawn, and it looks as though his endgame for Spider-Man's soul has finally arrived.

Being the final issue of writer Nick Spencer's run, everything he's been building towards since he started in 2018 is coming to a head, and it's certainly going to be a wild ride as the One More Day retcon is seemingly about to be retconned itself. That being said, with so many balls in the air and several plot points in need of resolutions, some have doubted Spencer's ability to successfully stick the landing before the new Spider-Man Beyond era begins with Amazing Spider-Man #75 and a new creative team. However, it seems as though there's a reason why this upcoming issue is oversized with nearly 100 pages. Here's hoping Amazing Spider-Man #74 doesn't disappoint when it releases on September 29th.
