Fantastic Beasts 3 Synopsis Moves Franchise Focus Onto Dumbledore

The synopsis for Fantastic Beasts 3: The Secrets of Dumbledore, shifts the franchise focus to Albus Dumbledore. Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them is the prequel series to the Harry Potter franchise, which kicked off in 2016 and starred Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander, a former student of Dumbledore's who has a strong connection to magical creatures and works to keep them safe. The sequel, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, brought Redmayne's Scamander back into the Wizarding World sequel, but added Jude Law as a young Dumbledore and Johnny Depp as the evil wizard, Grindelwald.

Based on the Wizarding World characters created by J.K. Rowling (who has also written the scripts for all Fantastic Beasts movies), the series has focused on the early history of the franchise, taking place 70 years prior to the events of the Harry Potter series. Albus Dumbledore is the headmaster of Hogwarts, the most famous of the Wizarding World schools, but his journey was a long one to get there, which Fantastic Beasts explores. The current story line revolves around Dumbledore and Scamander attempting to stop Grindelwald from building an army of "pure-blood" wizards to rule over all non-magical beings.

Today, the title and release date for the latest chapter in the series, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, were released, as well as a new synopsis, which shows a franchise shift to Albus Dumbledore. The film is once again written by J.K. Rowling and Steve Kloves with Jude Law returning to the role of Dumbledore, Redmayne as Scamander, Katherine Waterston as Tina Goldstein, Dan Fogler as Jacob Kowalski, Alison Sudol as Queenie Goldstein, and Ezra Miller as Credence Barebone. Director David Yates once again directs the sequel, which is now set to be released on April 15, 2022. Here's the full synopsis:

Professor Albus Dumbledore knows the powerful Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald is moving to seize control of the wizarding world. Unable to stop him alone, he entrusts Magizoologist Newt Scamander to lead an intrepid team of wizards, witches and one brave Muggle baker on a dangerous mission, where they encounter old and new beasts and clash with Grindelwald’s growing legion of followers. But with the stakes so high, how long can Dumbledore remain on the sidelines?

One significant change to the franchise is the recasting of Johnny Depp, who spawned controversy with his public divorce from actress Amber Heard, causing him to step away from the role of Grindelwald. Casino Royale actor Mads Mikkelsen is taking over the role and Fantastic Beasts 3 Synopsis Moves Franchise Focus Onto Dumbledore Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore will be his first appearance as the evil wizard. Mikkelsen has stated that he wants to portray the character in his own way, while acting as a bridge to what Depp had already done in the previous films.

The Fantastic Beasts franchise has had a bit of trouble finding the same momentum that the Harry Potter series had, and this new synopsis shows that the series is looking to expand and rely on more than Newt Scamander as the lead character. With Law in the role of Dumbledore (and the actor having an even greater presence in Fantastic Beasts 3: The Secrets of Dumbledore) there's certainly room to grow, as well as create a stronger bond to the Harry Potter source material, which is what most fans seem to want more of anyway. What began as a focus on Redmayne's Scamander and his magical creatures has slowly become more of a mission-themed battle against evil wizards, similar to what Harry Potter relied on. Either way, the Wizarding World remains a popular franchise that will no doubt continue to grow, even if all roads eventually lead back to Harry Potter.
