Bucky No Longer Has Marvel's Best Knife Trick | Screen Rant

Thanks to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Sebastian Stan’s The Winter Soldier no longer holds the title of the MCU character with the best knife skills. As a former Hydra assassin and super-soldier, Bucky has quite a few deadly talents, with one of his best being his knack for throwing and wielding knives. The character executed some memorable knife moves against Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

In the movie, Bucky used more than just guns and his cyborg arm to take down his targets. Some smooth knife tosses dispatched numerous opponents for him in the movie. And during his fight with Captain America, Winter Soldier deftly tossed the knife from one hand to another while fighting. Years after he turned over a new leaf, Bucky repeated a few of his knife tricks as easter eggs in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, which made it clear that while he’s not the killer he once was, he still hasn’t lost his touch when it comes to the handling of knives.

Phase 4 of the MCU just proved that as good as Winter Soldier may be, he’s not the best in this area, as both Shang-Chi (Simu Liu) and Death Dealer (Andy Le) have superior skills. Prior to the Mandarin’s big entrance in the modern-day portion of the film, the Master of Kung Fu and his father’s right-hand man had a thrilling martial arts showdown, which properly showcased both of their skillsets. During the fight, Shang-Chi seemingly knocked one of the knives free from Death Dealer’s grasp and succeeded in making a well-timed grab for it. During the same fight, another knife was hurled and caught by Death Dealer, who effortlessly transitioned into another attack.

Shang-Chi and Death Dealer expertly flipping knives around during an intense exchange of blows tops Bucky's MCU moves. Plus, Shang-Chi’s knife techniques were a bit more practical, whereas Winter Soldier's came off as flashy and unnecessary. What Bucky does takes skill and speed, but Shang-Chi and Death Dealer pulled off greater feats of finesse and quickness. Shang-Chi's fight scene felt like it came right out of an old-school martial arts movie, often filled with insanely precise and lightning-fast movements like these. The knife techniques in Shang-Chi served as another fun connection to the kung fu movie genre.

While Winter Soldier has a well-earned reputation as one of the MCU’s best fighters, it’s not a problem that the martial arts of Shang-Chi and Death Dealer appear to be better in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. After all, both spent years of their lives training with weaponry and hand-to-hand combat under the Mandarin (Tony Leung), a character who has been mastering martial arts styles from all over the globe for centuries. It’s also important to keep in mind that just like it is in the comics, martial arts are what Shang-Chi does best. There may not be a living fighter who can equal the talents of the MCU’s Master of Kung Fu.
